Project Title:
Pinpoint Cafe: The Art of Toast Preparation
Tools used in Development:
Lectora, Audacity, Canva, Photoshop, Adobe Express
Time in Development:
120 hours
Client:
Pinpoint Cafe
Challenge:
The existing training approach was informal, time-consuming, and lacked consistent, timely feedback. Previously, training consisted of a one-day, in-person session with the owner and no consistent or formal follow-up support. This resulted in over 40 preparation mistakes per week, contributing to customer dissatisfaction and operational inefficiencies. As a result, food prep staff were unsure about proper preparation techniques, leading to frequent order mistakes. These errors caused significant food waste, negative customer reviews, and revenue loss for the business.
Solution:
To address these challenges, I first conducted a thorough analysis through learner surveys, interviews, and consultations with subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify key performance gaps. Using this data, I created a course blueprint to outline learning objectives, structure, and content flow. I then developed a detailed script and storyboard, followed by a prototype to gather SME feedback.
To ensure the training reflected real-world procedures, I visited the cafe to capture videos and images of the actual toast preparation process. These assets were integrated into the course to provide authentic, visual guidance to learners.
Building on this foundation, I designed the interactive eLearning module using Lectora. The course included audio voiceovers recorded with Audacity, edited images using Photoshop, instructional videos created in Adobe Express, and supporting visuals sourced from Canva and Adobe Stock. The training emphasized both the "why" (importance of consistency, portion control, and visual presentation) and the "how" (step-by-step preparation techniques) behind each toast. It incorporated scenario-based learning, step-by-step demonstrations, knowledge checks, and visual cues to enhance learner engagement and retention.
Results:
This training addressed the need for a standardized process for preparing two of Pinpoint Cafe’s signature toasts. The training is expected to reduce preparation errors by 50% over the course of one month by providing clear, standardized steps for assembling the cafe’s signature toasts. With improved guidance and built-in feedback, food prep staff will feel more confident and capable in their roles. This should lead to faster onboarding for new hires, fewer mistakes during busy shifts, and a decrease in food waste due to fewer incorrectly prepared orders. Over time, the cafe anticipates improved customer satisfaction and greater overall efficiency in kitchen operations, ultimately leading to increased business revenue.
